I had planned to continue with the ‘excess sodium and heart disease/failure’ discussion but given the forecasted high temperatures this weekend, I thought I would refresh your knowledge about the signs of hot weather health dangers – heat stroke, and sunburn.

There are 3 ‘levels’: Heat Cramps, Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke.

Heat Cramps: usually in the abdomen, arms or legs. Cause: depletion of salt and/or moisture. Treatment: stop activity, replace fluids and find a cool place to hang out.

Heat Exhaustion: mild form of shock caused by strenuous activity in the heat. Symptoms include: sweating, clammy skin, fast weak pulse, nausea. Extreme cases complicated by rhabdomyolysis. Treatment: stop activity, replace fluids, cool hang out place.

Heat Stroke: life-threatening, body’s temperature control system effectively shuts down. Call 911. Brain damage or death can result if the body is not cooled immediately and medical care is obtained. Do Not give fluids to someone suffering from Heat Stroke unless advised to by medical personnel. Symptoms: high body temperature >103F, hot red moist or dry skin, rapid strong pulse, unconsciousness. Call 911.

Sunburn: sunscreens, light colored clothing, stay in the shade. Symptoms: reddened skin painful to the touch, fluid-filled blisters, fever. Sunburned skin can also exacerbate heat-related illnesses.

Please be careful, particularly over the next few days. Be sensible. Be watchful. Stay hydrated. And replace your salt.
