“Reduce your salt intake and reduce your risk of heart disease.” We have heard that for many years. “Consume too much salt, your body retains water to compensate” (until your kidneys catch up and excrete the excess salt). Long article discussing the ongoing debate about dietary salt – “The (Political) Science of Salt” by Gary Taubes – but quite interesting.

There are the government and government scientists advising one thing – eat less salt. The salt and processed food companies making some concessions but still putting excessive amounts of salt in their products. And then there is another group of doctors/scientists saying maybe it’s not just the reduction of dietary salt that lowers hypertension but the accumulated benefits of reducing salt, sugar and fat intake that is helping to lower blood pressure and reducing the risk of heart disease.

My read on it is, and it is only my opinion you make up your own minds, that by eliminating or at least, reducing processed foods from one’s diet, you will be well on the way to reducing all those risk factors anyway.

Then Paul shared the following article with me this morning: “Recognising and Avoiding Salt Deficiencies” by Carolyn Shearlock  In hot, humid weather, if you find yourself suffering from cramps, headaches and irritability, it may be due to lack of salt.

It’s hot, you sweat, then dry and realize that the crusty white grit on your face is salt. Replace it conservatively and “….. most health experts do recommend around two liters a day, or about eight 8-ounce glasses. “This amount can include water, other liquid beverages, and water-dense foods,”…..”   You’re Probably Not Drinking Enough Water – Here Are Two Simple Ways To Check : RealSimple
