Seasons change for a reason – to get rid of the old and nasty and make room for the new and good. We, as in human beings, have to make changes throughout our lives to keep ourselves healthy and fit. Sometimes we delay those changes, resulting in serious consequences. A couple of weeks ago, I highlighted Athena Perez and her life changes. I have no doubt that there are similar stories amongst our T2 members (I would love to share them if you are willing to tell) but this week’s story comes from our very own Paul Tunnicliffe.

“Just over 16 years ago, I underwent emergency angioplasty surgery to unblock 4 major blood vessels entering and exiting my heart. I weighed in at around 240#; a sedentary lifestyle compounded by having stopped competitive sailing, alcohol fueled and migrating from a heavy to occasional smoker.

I knew I was in trouble but not how much trouble as I ignored chest and arm pains. Not a recipe for long life. And how much I would have missed if I hadn’t made a change: my daughter’s Olympic campaigns, my granddaughter, my time with both my children’s new families and the quality time spent with Joanna these past few years. I would not have been around for any of that. I got lucky; got a break but it was a tough place from which to start.

The event and post-operation certainly made me realize my mortality. After the surgery, I had multiple tablets to take daily, and rigorous, regular checks-up on blood work etc.

With Joanna’s assistance I started on changing myself and to see more clearly what was important in my life. My first half marathon was a couple of years later, with the goal of running all the way, which I achieved. Diet improved and exercise increased. I completed several more half marathons and many, many 5K races.

Life outside of the high pressure executive world I had strived to conquer, became more important, the most important. In 2009 I stopped drinking alcohol completely and the weight loss was significant. Shortly after that Anna started talking about CrossFit and how she was using it as part of her 2012 Olympic campaign. On a visit to Miami FL, I was introduced to Brad, my first CrossFit coach, and we did a workout down there in the heat. It was fun and it hurt the next day or two.

Over the next few years, both Joanna and I learned to embrace the clean eating/Paleo-style food lifestyle and the CrossFit workout training. The changes made in my life’s priorities, diet and exercise have me basically off all the medications I was told I would have to take for the rest of my life.  I believe the active lifestyle, healthful eating and community support that T2 CrossFit promotes has enabled me to significantly improve my wellness and has me well on the way to the fitness end of the spectrum.

Joanna and I have just completed the CrossFit Team challenge finishing third in the world in our age/ability group.  Not too shabby.

CrossFit has given me and continues to give me an active lifestyle but more importantly, it gives me a life in which to have that lifestyle.
