Today is the day. Well, it is if you have signed up for the 2018 Reebok CrossFit Opens. At 8:00pm this evening, Dave Castro will introduce and announce 18.1 – the first of 5 WODs which make up the Opens. You can usually watch the announcement on the CrossFit Games website and on the Games Facebook page. (I think)

If you are still on the fence about whether or not to take part, speak to Anna and/or Brad. They will advise you on your best course of action. It might be just that you take the online Judge’s Course and come to Friday Night Lights to see how it all works and to get you inspired for next year. Or they might say, “Yes, do it”.

I read the article put out by CrossFit Games this week about DC’s 5 ‘worst’ Open WODs. The words of wisdom that stuck in my head were (and I paraphrase):

The Opens’ through the Games’ workouts are not to train; they are to test the athletes. They will take you to the dark place. Be prepared to go there.

T2 member William Best visited the St Bernard School Cub Scout meeting yesterday to share with the boys, tales and experiences of his “Forensics” job as Scientist for the Allegheny County Medical Examiners Office.  He showed the boys his fingerprint kit and his camera that he uses at crime scenes. The boys hung on every word – fascinating.


If you did today’s workout and thought it was more horrendous than normal, there is a reason for that. The idea is that if you are planning on participating in the Opens workout on Friday, you need a rest day today. This is the only time of the year you may legitimately ‘cherry pick’ your workout and not go to the gym.


Congratulations to everyone who achieved PR’s this week. Ready just in time for the Opens.


Saturday 9:00am Free Adult Community Class – open to members and non-members alike, all skill levels (none to expert) welcome and encouraged. A little hesitant? Come with a friend.


10:30am Members’ Only WOD These are a lot of fun. Meet members whom you wouldn’t normally see. Workout with a partner or in teams of 3. And don’t worry, as always movements are modifiable and scaleable.

I will be running the Pittsburgh Marathon Relay this year, 6th May, as part of the “run for a cure” Pittsburgh group to raise money towards research to help find a cure for Cystic Fibrosis.
