Balance & Coordination (advanced neurological skills)

To be able to walk to the car, you need coordination – changing foot position from one to the other – and balance – keeping everything in equilibrium so you don’t fall over. More than likely, you’ve not thought about this or other tasks in such a manner, you just take if for granted. However, for some it’s not that simple, and as we age, balance is one of the first skills we lose (old people falling). Are we able to do something about it? Absolutely.

Coordination and balance are the other two neurological skills along with accuracy and agility. By low pressure, many repetitions of tasks, we can train our brain and neurological pathways to be more efficient and more ready to stabilize us when we start to ‘sway’. Core strength, and overall muscle strengthening will help to improve balance and learning complex movements will help improve coordination. 

Start with a basic exercise, such as standing on one leg. You can do this anywhere – in the grocery store check out line, while brushing your teeth, while putting on your socks and shoes after a workout. 

And given that we are born with a fear of falling, it is probably to our advantage to keep working on improving our balance and coordination skills.
